There are just 2 things that make a productive day around here...

2 boys at school and sunshine!

I've finally gotten some time to start painting things for the Funky Junk Sisters show.  I'm a little behind!  But that is usually how it ends up for me...

I keep telling myself I'm better under pressure...  But I don't think I've ever be ahead of the game so I wouldn't know!

It is a lovely day and I do believe (knock on wood) that spring has finally arrived!

Awkward Family Photos

Not getting anything accomplished today or yesterday because Sam is home sick with Bronchitis. :(  He is doing okay and we are just hanging out with each other and playing a lot of

Shark Jacks... :)

New Kitchen Open Cabinet

Here are the photos of the new cabinet I got in place of our old ugly cabinet.  We originally were going to put up these:

Pottery Barn shelves.  However after getting them here and trying to get them on our slightly bowed wall, they wouldn't work.  I was so mad.  Not that there aren't much worse things in life to get mad at, but it just really irked me that day.  Plus now I have to drive about and hour to return them to a store.  This was part of the reason I got so cranky about it I think.

So that night I told Jason I was going to Antique mall to find something to fit there, if it took me all night. 

And... I did!  What are the chances of that!  Usually if you go specifically for something at an Antique mall you would never find it!  Plus is was only about $40.  YIPEE!  Saves us about $160 (once I return those dang shelves) and I think I like 10 times better.

So here is the before photo.

Here is what it looks like now after a million coats of primer and white paint (it was orange on the insede before).

Ahhhhhh....  Like a breath of fresh air.

Still have to hang my sheer white curtains but I really love it.

See that pitcher on top on the right.  That was my grandmas and I remember drinking iced tea out of it when I was a kid.  The cup was hers too, but we could only find the one.  I know there was about 6 at one time.  I'm going to be searching the antique malls for those.  Brings back good memories of swimming at their house, ice tea, and summertime.

What do you think?  Way better than the before and I think better than the shelves would have looked.  More character, I think.

I also want to say I hope every has had a good Memorial Day and thank you to all who have served our country and their families. 

Mother's Day Mirror

This is mirror that Jason and the boys bought for me for mothers day... Just to go in the spot above our mantle.  

Jason was secretly sooooo happy I took the painting to the antique mall.  He new if he played his cards right I would.  He knew not to say he didn't like it, because if he said he didn't like it, then I would find reason to like it more.  (I'm so stubborn and I'm embarrassed that I'm like this, but it is what it is... :)

Anyway we ended up both liking what we've got there now, so it's a win/win!

Not a great photo, but you can get the idea. (I still have my mantle to arrange too.   Like the nice photo frame without the photo?  My very best friend Karen  is notorious for this... ironic huh?  It must have rubbed off on me.)

Here is closer up one.

I just primed it.  Then painted it white.  Then I mixed up some aqua paint with faux glaze.  (Usually about 2 times as much glaze as paint)  Then rubbed it on with an old towel.  That way you can get it into the cracks and crevices for definition and then have it lighter on the other parts or the frame.

The boys were very happy to help pick it out, so there was no way I was going to exchange it. :)  Now everyone is happy.

I really love how it turned out...  Not bad for $50 at the Salvation Army and a little elbow grease.

Working on the Kitchen

We've been working on the kitchen today.  I've got news about those Pottery Barn shelves... If your wall has any curve at all to it, they won't work.  BOO HOO!  I about had a tizzy last night when we were trying to hang them. 

After about 1/2 hour of pouting, we figured out something else.  I'll have to share that in a couple days, but in the meantime, here is some lovely kitchen inspiration I found.   Be still my aqua/turquoise/robins egg blue/seafoam green loving heart.

Ugh, what I would give for one of these.

I may be late to the game on this one, but I just had to share.

I'm always on the lookout for healthier alternatives to yummy food, but the key is for me it still really has to be yummy or I just won't do it long term.

I've been trying to eat a little less carbs, not cutting them out, but cutting back a bit.  Also trying to get a little more protien.  So instead of my yummy pepperoni lean pocket I usually have for lunch, I've been eating more salads with turkey or grilled chicken.

So the other day I'm at albertson's and came across these salad dressings.  Bolthouse Farms  They were dressings made with yogurt!  Brilliant, I tell you!  But I was a little skeptical. 

But when I opened one for my salad the next day.   aaaaaaahhhhhh!!!!  It was delicious!

I got the Thousand Island (which tastes good as light dressing anyway so I thought I would be safer with that one) and the Creamy Italian.  They are both really good! 

Regular Thousand Island is about 150 cals and 15 grams of fat per serving.  Bolthouse is 70 cals per serving and 5.5 grams of fat.

I can't wait to try the others!

Whole Wheat Oatmeal Flax Seed Chocolate Chip Cookies

Sam is home sick today.  He has a cold.  It's raining and yucky out.  Sam keeps telling me he is "bored".  I keep telling him you are supposed to be bored when you are sick.

Finally... the only solution to our blues... make cookies...

Whole Wheat Oatmeal Flax Seed Chocolate Chip Cookies may not sound good to you... But trust me, they are "delicious and nutritious".  Said just like Sam's Unca Nick.

We are eating cookies and hoping for sunshine.

Recipe:

Okay here is how I made them.  I kinda just made it up, by looking at oatmeal choc chip recipes.  But it's good I promise.

1 cup butter

1 cup packed brown sugar

1/2 cup white sugar

2 eggs

2 teas vanilla

3/4 cup whole wheat flour

3/4 cup regular flour

1 teas baking soda

1 teas salt

2 1/4 cup quick cooking oats

3 tablespoons flax seeds (I used whole flax seeds)

1 1/2 cup semisweet choc chips

preheat oven to 375.

mix together butter and sugars.  Beat in eggs, then vanilla.  Combine flours, baking soda, and salt; stir into creamed mixture until just blended.  Mix in the oats, then flax seeds and finally the choc chips.

bake for 9-10 minutes!

We got some photos from Ben's game the other night finally.  I got some great shots of some of Ben's friends, but not so many great shots of him, so we'll keep trying, but here are some of the big guy in action.

He looks so old to me in this photo.  He is playing second base.

Actually it was just really cold, so I think he is trying to keep his hands warm.

Hopefully we will have some of him batting next time.  Tonight is a game for Sam and then we have practice tomorrow for Ben and 2 games on Saturday.
