Hoosier Cabinets
At my mom and dads house during our Christmas break we were flipping through the channels one night and lucky for us, "A Christmas Story" was on. This might be one of my favorite movies of all time, but I have a tendency to say every movie I see that I really like or every movie I've recently seen that I like is "my favorite movie of all time". I do this with songs on the radio too... So when I say that, you have to take it with a grain of salt I guess...
Anyhoo...
While we were all watching Ralphie trying to convince everyone he needed a Red Rider BB Gun (my mom actually got a Red Rider BB Gun when she was Ralphie's age, and no she didn't shoot her eye out, but my brother almost shot out his friends eye with a BB gun when we were growing up..... okay.... back to the origianl story...) I noticed the coolest cabinet in Ralphie's kitchen. And since I've become 40's and 50's era kitchen junkie, I had to find out what it was.
Ta-da....
A Hoosier Cabinet. Be still my heart...
Here are some other ones, but I love the ones with that green color....

Okay so you get the idea.
I'll probably never have a jadite green and white Hoosier Cabinet, because all the ones on Ebay are for pick-up only in states like Pennsylvania and New Jersey and of couse Indiana. Can't just run my little truck over and pick it up.... since I'm in Washington State....
Plus, in our house now I have no room for one... But a girl can dream... :)

Could you imagine your life right now without the internet. YOu might not know what a Hoosier cabinet is.. And you know we could always do a girls road trip to Indiana, and stop at all sorts of antique stores along the way. Of course this would probably require a trailer and lots of junk food and greasy mom and pop joints.. OOHH my stomach hurts just thinking about it!!!!!

Is Texas too far too? ha.
We have a HUGE flea market called "First Monday" in Canton (east of Dallas) every month and antiques are a dime a dozen. My best friend got her hoosier cabinet out there years ago (she's since sold it but it was really cute).
I haven't been out there in a couple of years, but the antiques are a-plenty!!! Great finds and prices of stuff are cheap-cheap. You'd go crazy!!!
Glad y'all had a great Christmas and made it home safe--that looked treacherous!!!

I live in VT and Hoosier's are EVERYWHERE! You see them on Craigslist and at local auctions all the time. Affordable, too. I'm amazed at these oldie but goodies settled right here in the Northeast. You are, btw, always welcome to come and visit ;)

Hi Jill,
It's me again! I never got back to you at Christmas about the products. I was just googling to see if I could find your products in a store and I stumbled upon your blog! The "Hoosier Cabinet" post caught my eye because I have one in my kitchen! My dad bought it for my mom after they were married 38 years ago. It was originally green, then I think it was blue, then yellow and when I got it, I decided to paint it red. It is a nice barn red and then the "frame type" pieces that around the doors I painted a taupey-linen color. It looks nice with the red Pottery Barn dining chairs. I don't know if it's because it has been painted so many times or what, but the paint has kind of a neat texture on it. One of my friends said, "Oh, is that the linen technique?" I had no idea what she meant, but thougtht I would capitalize on my bad painting skills and said, "Oh yeah! Didn't that turn out great?" Now I get many compliments on the "linen technique." :) I will have to send you a pic sometime. It is in excellent shape for as old as it is. Take Care, Gretl
